Lionel Messi has written another defining chapter in World Cup history after scoring twice in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria, a result that confirmed the reigning champions’ progression into the last 32 with a game to spare.
The 38-year-old captain, widely regarded as the greatest footballer of his generation, moved clear as the tournament’s all-time leading scorer, taking his tally to 17 goals. His landmark came after he had already equalled Miroslav Klose’s record in Argentina’s opening 3-0 win over Algeria, where he scored a hat-trick.
The match in Texas, played in front of 70,649 fans at the Dallas Cowboys’ air-conditioned home, initially threatened to swing against Messi. Early in the game, Argentina were awarded a penalty after Lautaro Martinez was brought down in the box following a VAR review. However, Messi’s effort lacked conviction, as he stepped up with a slow run-up and dragged his shot wide, silencing a crowd heavily tilted in Argentina’s favour.
Despite the setback, Messi remained central to Argentina’s attacking rhythm. He was denied twice by Austria captain David Alaba, first when Alaba nicked the ball away just as Messi broke through on goal, and again when he blocked a goal-bound effort with goalkeeper Alexander Schlager stranded.

Austria, organised under Ralf Rangnick, opted for a compact defensive approach and offered little in attack during the first half. They failed to register a shot on target before the break.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 38th minute. Messi finished clinically after being played in by Facundo Medina, with Thiago Almada cleverly allowing the ball to run through, leaving the forward unmarked in front of goal. The finish brought a wave of relief and celebration from Argentina’s supporters.
Messi’s goal came amid emotional undertones, following reports of a family health issue affecting his father, and just days after uncertainty over his participation in the tournament hosted in North America.
Argentina struggled to impose themselves in the second half, with Austria marginally improving without seriously threatening goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
However, Messi ensured the contest ended on his terms. Deep into injury time, he pounced inside the box during a scramble, outmanoeuvring multiple defenders before forcing the ball home to seal the 2-0 win and complete another historic milestone in his international career.
