The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in a joint operation with the Nigerian Army, has raided a four-bedroom bungalow used as a cannabis warehouse in Illushi Community, Esan South East Local Government Area.

The operation led to the seizure of more than 1.3 tonnes of cannabis and cannabis seeds, while two suspected drug traffickers were arrested.

The State NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed on Tuesday in Benin City that operatives recovered 52 large bags of cannabis, three gallons of cannabis seeds and an additional bag containing cannabis seeds.

According to him, the seized drugs comprised 1,273kg of cannabis and 86kg of cannabis seeds, with a combined weight of 1,359kg.

Ofoyeju said officers raided the residential property, which had been converted into a storage facility for illegal drugs, during the operation.

He identified the suspects as 45-year-old Ojore Onweze, who was allegedly found with 60kg of cannabis, and 30-year-old George Agwumede, who was arrested in connection with 13kg of the substance.

The NDLEA commander described the use of residential buildings to store illicit drugs as a serious threat to communities, warning that such activities must be tackled collectively.

He said the large seizure demonstrated the agency’s determination to dismantle drug trafficking networks and safeguard public safety.

Ofoyeju added that investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the syndicate and uncover the full extent of the operation.

He also commended the Nigerian Army for its collaboration and urged community leaders and residents to support efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse.

According to him, the agency remains committed to protecting vulnerable groups and ensuring those involved in the illegal drug trade are brought to justice.
