The Nigerian Government has assured civil servants that payment of the outstanding N35,000 wage award arrears will begin before the middle of August, while outstanding promotion arrears are also being processed.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, during a meeting with the leadership of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC), Trade Side, in Abuja.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the approval process for the release of funds has reached its final stage, with eligible workers expected to begin receiving the outstanding wage award before mid-August.
Oyedele said President Bola Tinubu‘s administration remains committed to honouring agreements reached with organised labour, adding that the government had already started addressing several issues raised by labour before receiving its formal communication.
He also directed ministry officials to engage relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to accelerate action on unresolved labour concerns.
Permanent Secretary Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma disclosed that Batch 7 promotion arrears, previously omitted from an earlier payment exercise, are now being processed alongside Batch 9.
The JPSNC urged the Nigerian Government to expedite payment of outstanding entitlements, including promotion arrears, salary relativity for health workers and other welfare claims, saying timely implementation would strengthen industrial harmony and boost workers’ confidence.
