A Nigerian national, Qudus Ajeyemi, who was studying in the United Kingdom, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison after being convicted of attempted rape and sexual assault in Hull.
Ajeyemi, 27, known by the nickname “Spartan”, was found guilty following a six-day trial at Hull Crown Court. He was residing on May Street in Hull and was in the UK on a student visa at the time of the offence in early 2023.
Court proceedings revealed that the victim had gone to a property on Tavistock Street in Hull after a night out and was taken upstairs by Ajeyemi after feeling unwell.

Prosecutor Charlotte Baines told the court: “Spartan led her upstairs and she lay down on the bed. She thought that he would leave her there to have a sleep. Within a few seconds, Spartan was touching her.
“She pushed him off and told him: ‘I’m not here for that.’ Her response did not deter Spartan and he touched her again.”
The court heard that the woman managed to escape and ran downstairs in distress, where she broke down in tears. She later reported the incident to police after preserving messages and call records, including FaceTime communications in which Ajeyemi allegedly admitted wrongdoing and apologised.
Following an investigation by Humberside Police, he was charged and prosecuted.
In addition to his prison sentence, the court ordered that Ajeyemi be deported to Nigeria after completing his term. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and given a seven-year restraining order.
Detective Sergeant Ethan Anderson praised the victim for reporting the case, describing her actions as courageous and noting that sexual offence investigations are handled with seriousness by law enforcement.
He said Ajeyemi had taken advantage of the victim and caused lasting trauma, while stressing that victims are encouraged to report such crimes whenever they feel ready.
