The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy skies and thunderstorms across the country from Wednesday to Friday.

In its three-day weather outlook, the agency predicted patches of cloud over the northern region on Wednesday, with chances of morning thunderstorms accompanied by light rain in parts of Taraba and Kebbi states.

Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna states.

For the North Central region, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms with light rain over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“During the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected over most parts of the region,” the agency said.

In the South, NiMet predicted cloudy conditions with morning rainfall over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states.

Moderate rainfall is expected across most parts of the region later in the day.

On Thursday, the agency forecast patches of cloud over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall expected in parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna states.

By the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states.

For the North Central region, NiMet predicted sunny skies with patches of cloud, along with morning thunderstorms and light rain over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, and Benue states.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected over most parts of the region,” it said.

In the South, light rainfall is expected in parts of Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states during the morning, followed by widespread rainfall across most parts of the region later in the day.

NiMet also warned of a high risk of flooding in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the forecast period.

On Friday, the agency forecast partly cloudy skies over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected in parts of Taraba and Adamawa states.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across parts of Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba states.

For the North Central region, NiMet predicted sunny skies with patches of cloud and morning thunderstorms with light rainfall over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger states.

It added that thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across most parts of the region later in the day.

In the South, cloudy conditions are expected, with moderate rainfall forecast for parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the morning hours. Moderate rainfall is expected to spread across most parts of the region later in the day.

NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in affected areas and urged the public to take necessary precautions by securing loose objects, avoiding shelter under tall trees and taking other safety measures against strong winds.

The agency also advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall and urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning.

It further called on states at risk of flash flooding to immediately activate their emergency response systems.
