The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has expressed sadness over the death of a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The university said it received information about an emergency involving the student at an apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife, at about 1:30pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
According to a statement by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the Quick Response and Security Team immediately went to the location after receiving the report.
The university said the Nigeria Police Force was also contacted. Officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university’s security personnel at the scene.
“The student was subsequently conveyed to the University Health Centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor,” the statement said.

The university said it was concerned about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and had handed information and items recovered from the scene to the police for investigation.
It added that the police had commenced an investigation into the incident.
The university also notified the relevant student affairs authorities to provide necessary follow-up, particularly on the welfare and support of students affected by the tragedy.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased student’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues.
He also expressed concern for members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the incident.
OAU urged students and other members of the university community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information or speculation while the investigation continues.
The university also encouraged students facing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help from trusted individuals and appropriate support structures.
Bamire reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of staff and students.
He said, “No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone.”
The university assured members of the community that the appropriate authorities were handling the matter and that further information would be communicated through official channels where necessary.
