Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has introduced a weekly rest day and a N10,000 monthly transport allowance for state workers over a three-month period beginning April 2026.
The decision was announced in a statement on Thursday by the Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya.
According to the statement, the measures are designed to ease the financial burden caused by rising fuel prices, which have been linked to ongoing military actions by the United States and Israel against the Republic of Iran.
“Towards providing succour to the workforce of Ogun State in light of the hike in the pump price of fuel in the country and its attendant impact on the cost of transportation and general standard of living, Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved a one-day off duty per week for workers in the state,” Onasanya said.
He added that this comes alongside a special transport allowance of N10,000, which will serve as a palliative for three months starting April 2026.
“This is in addition to the payment of N10,000 special transport allowance as palliatives for three months commencing from April 2026.”
The Head of Service noted that the initiative aims to offer relief amid high fuel costs while also boosting service delivery through a more motivated workforce.
According to Onasanya, certain categories of employees are exempt from the weekly day off but will still receive the N10,000 allowance.
These include medical personnel, judicial staff, teaching and non-teaching staff at primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, security personnel, accounting officers, department heads across various ministries and agencies, and any officers who receive special allowances tied to responsibilities that require physical presence.
Onasanya explained that the specific off-day for each eligible worker will be determined by accounting officers within their respective ministries, departments, and agencies to prevent disruptions to service delivery.
