Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have recovered a stolen 2016 Toyota Camry from a hotel in Ifo, Ogun State, less than eight hours after the vehicle was reported missing.
The police also arrested one suspect, identified as Monday Adetunji, while the alleged driver, who reportedly absconded with the vehicle, Waidi Olaide Kolawale, fled the scene.
The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said in a statement issued on Sunday that the vehicle belongs to an Indian national who resides at the Ilupeju Industrial Estate in Lagos.
The vehicle was allegedly stolen on September 9, 2026, by Kolawale, who had been employed by the Indian national only two days earlier.
According to the police, Kolawale told his employer that he was taking the vehicle to a nearby vulcaniser to repair a tyre but allegedly absconded with it.
Following the report, the vehicle was tracked to the Ifo axis.
The information was relayed to the Divisional Police Officer of the Ifo Division, CSP Kamorudeen Olabisi, who reportedly analysed the available intelligence before deploying surveillance and anti-robbery operatives.
The operatives tracked the vehicle through several locations before locating it at a hotel in Ifo at about 8:30 p.m.
Babaseyi said Kolawale fled with the ignition key when he sighted the operatives, while his alleged accomplice, Adetunji, was arrested at the scene.
Preliminary investigation showed that the suspects had allegedly approached a mechanic to remove the vehicle’s catalyst, but the mechanic declined.
The police said they secured the recovered vehicle, while efforts continue to arrest the fleeing suspect and determine the full circumstances of the incident.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism.
Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
The command also advised vehicle owners to use reliable tracking devices and additional anti-theft measures, including steering and tyre locks.
It urged members of the public to exercise due diligence when entrusting vehicles, property or access to homes and businesses to others.
Hoteliers were also advised to strengthen guest and vehicle verification, maintain accurate records and report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities to the police.
