Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has appointed 4,800 special assistants across the state’s 192 wards to strengthen grassroots governance and increase participation in his administration.

Okpebholo announced the appointments on Monday during a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) members from the 18 local government areas at the Government House in Benin City.

The appointments will see 25 Special Assistants assigned to each ward across the state.

The governor said the move was part of efforts to take government programmes, development and opportunities closer to residents at the grassroots.

“So, we are taking governance to the grassroots so that whatever is from the top will also go down to the bottom,” Okpebholo said.

He also described the appointments as recognition of the collective efforts of APC members in securing the party’s electoral victory.

“Appointing 4,800 SAs is not an issue at all because we all worked for this victory. The victory does not belong to Okpebholo alone,” he said.

The governor thanked party members for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the APC across Edo State.

Earlier, APC State Chairman Jarret Tenebe said the governor had approved 25 special assistants for each of the 192 wards.

Tenebe explained that the meeting was organised to brief ward chairmen and party members on the criteria and guidelines for selecting beneficiaries.

“In his magnanimity, the governor has decided to appoint 25 SAs in each of the wards in 192 wards across the state,” Tenebe said.

He added that the APC State Working Committee had set up a committee to work with the wards and ensure that the selection process followed the approved guidelines.

The committee will compile the names of qualified nominees and submit them to the APC headquarters in Benin City.

Tenebe also praised the Okpebholo administration for creating more opportunities for the party to operate at the grassroots, including support for APC candidates during the local government elections.

The meeting was attended by members of the APC State Working Committee, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, Chief of Staff to the Governor, ward chairmen, and other party representatives from the 18 local government areas.
