More than 200 professors and other academic staff have resigned from Kaduna State University (KASU) over poor working conditions and the university’s failure to implement the 2025 Nigerian Government-ASUU Agreement, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) KASU chapter said.
The ASUU-KASU Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed this on Monday at a press conference held at the union’s secretariat in Kaduna.
Abdullahi said the departures had been driven largely by poor conditions of service and the failure to implement the agreement, which took effect in January 2026.
He said despite repeated appeals to the university management, Governing Council, Visitor to the university and the Kaduna State Government, implementation of the agreement had yet to begin at KASU.
“The union has written several letters to the university management, Governing Council and the Visitor to the university, the Governor of Kaduna State and urged them to domesticate and implement the agreement in accordance with the law establishing the institution,” he said.

According to Abdullahi, the delay had continued for eight months, even though several Nigerian and state universities had either implemented the agreement or announced timelines for its implementation.
He warned that the continued delay could lead to salary arrears dating back to January 2026 and leave KASU academic staff among the least-paid university workers in the country.
The union also warned that losing experienced lecturers, including professors, could take years for the university to recover from.
Abdullahi said ASUU-KASU’s Congress, at a meeting on August 12, 2026, resolved to “declare an industrial dispute and embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike” if the issues were not addressed.
The decision followed a resolution by ASUU’s National Executive Council at its meeting at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.
ASUU-KASU also listed other unresolved issues, including university autonomy, excessive workload, promotion arrears, death benefits, group life insurance, the 25 and 35 percent wage awards and pension remittances.
The union has given the university authorities and other relevant stakeholders two weeks to take concrete steps to implement and domesticate the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
It urged parents, stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene to prevent an indefinite strike that could disrupt academic activities at the university.
