Plateau Schools Reopen After Diphtheria Closure

The Plateau State Government has ordered public and private primary and secondary schools to reopen on Monday.

In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, on Friday, the government said the measures were introduced to strengthen health surveillance and response.

“The temporary closure of schools, which took effect on September 7, 2026, was a preventive measure designed to provide health authorities with the opportunity to assess the situation and strengthen surveillance and response mechanisms in affected and potentially affected communities,” the statement said.

The reopening follows the implementation of precautionary health measures to contain suspected diphtheria cases reported in parts of the state.

The government had temporarily closed all public and private primary and secondary schools from September 7 as a preventive measure.

The government said the resumption aligned with its commitment to protect pupils, students, teachers and other members of the school community while ensuring continuity in education. It assured parents, guardians, school proprietors and administrators that appropriate health measures were being put in place to reduce the risk of transmission.

School authorities were directed to maintain clean and hygienic learning environments and remain alert to symptoms linked to diphtheria.

“Teachers and school management are encouraged to remain vigilant for symptoms or signs suggestive of Diphtheria and promptly alert the appropriate health authorities,” the government said.

Parents and guardians were also urged to maintain good hygiene, including regular handwashing, and avoid unnecessary close contact with people showing suspicious symptoms.

The government advised parents to seek medical attention promptly if children or other household members develop concerning symptoms, and warned against self-medication or concealing suspected cases, stressing that early detection and treatment were critical to preventing further spread.

It urged parents, teachers, students, school proprietors and other stakeholders to comply with health advisories as schools resume on Monday.
