Hamzat Seeks APC Backing for Lagos 2027 Race

The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, alongside several leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Sunday met with Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, to hold consultations ahead of the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.

The meeting was attended by Muti Are, Secretary of the Governors’ Advisory Council; Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon; Bode Oyedele; Senator Musiliu Obanikoro; Adekunle Olayinka; and Hakeem Shittu, Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, among others.

Musiliu Obanikoro, who chaired the meetings, revealed that the team came to seek Gbajabiamila’s support for Hamzat’s bid to become Lagos State governor in 2027.

He noted that Hamzat is well experienced in Lagos politics and requires the backing of APC leaders to secure victory in the governorship contest.

In his remarks, the deputy governor said the visit was aimed at receiving guidance from Gbajabiamila and drawing on his experience to effectively plan for the election under the ruling party.

He stressed that Nigeria must succeed and expressed confidence in the APC’s chances at both federal and state levels. He added that the party’s organisational structure must be preserved, which informed the consultation with the chief of staff.

Hamzat further stated that the economic stability achieved under President Tinubu should be sustained, emphasising the need for the party to make the right choice in selecting its governorship candidate to ensure continuity in Lagos State governance.

“We discussed the direction of our state and the work required to move it forward,” the deputy governor wrote on his X account.

“It remains our shared responsibility to strengthen Lagos and continue delivering better outcomes for our people. I am focused and clear about the work ahead.”

In response, Gbajabiamila assured Hamzat of his support for his gubernatorial ambition, adding that the people of Surulere would also back him during the election.

He further noted that if a primary election becomes necessary, the party would conduct it in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
