The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Federal High Court in Abuja on Sunday, demanding full disclosure of political contribution limits ahead of the 2027 general elections.
SERAP requested a court order compelling INEC to clarify whether it established contribution ceilings under Section 91 of the Electoral Act 2026, publish those limits, and outline its strategy to enforce compliance among political parties, donors, and candidates.
The advocacy group also demanded that INEC publish all political party financial statements, audited accounts, sources of funds, and election-expenditure returns covering 2023 through 2025.

SERAP’s legal team argued that public access to political finance data is essential for voters, journalists, and civil society groups to monitor compliance, prevent illegal political funding, and hold political actors accountable as preparations for the 2027 elections begin.
Additionally, the suit seeks disclosure of INEC’s statutory audit reports submitted to the National Assembly under Section 226 of the Constitution, alongside details of any enforcement actions taken against non-compliant parties.
SERAP emphasised that publishing these reports will confirm whether the electoral body effectively fulfils its constitutional duties before voters head to the polls.
The court has not yet set a hearing date for the suit.
