At least six people have died in wildfires sweeping parts of Algeria, the country’s Interior Ministry said, as firefighters continue battling blazes fuelled by an intense heatwave.

In a statement, the ministry confirmed the fatalities and said that provincial authorities had been instructed to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the fires.

“In the wake of the fires that affected certain provinces of the country in recent days, six deaths have been registered,” the ministry said.

The government said the assessment would support compensation efforts for people affected by the wildfires.

The ministry added that emergency resources had been deployed to contain the remaining fires still burning across parts of the North African country.

Northern Algeria has been hit by an intense heatwave that has triggered hundreds of forest fires. The country has experienced repeated deadly wildfire seasons in recent years, with dozens of lives lost in similar incidents.
