South Africa secured a place in the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history on Wednesday, edging South Korea 1-0 in a decisive Group A encounter in Monterrey.
The result marks a dramatic turnaround for Bafana Bafana, who entered the tournament under pressure after a 2-0 opening defeat to group winners Mexico. From that point, their qualification hopes looked uncertain, but a disciplined draw against the Czech Republic kept them alive heading into the final matchday.
The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko converted from close range after Tshepang Moremi delivered a precise cross into the box. Maseko kept his composure to fire inside the near post, a finish that ultimately sealed South Africa’s progression.
South Korea, meanwhile, made a bold selection decision before kickoff, with coach Hong Myung-bo dropping captain Son Heung-min from the starting line-up. The move raised eyebrows, given Son’s status as one of Asia’s most influential players, though he was introduced at the start of the second half as Hong attempted to shift momentum.

The Asian side began brightly. Kim Min-jae’s powerful header was blocked on the goal line by Aubrey Modiba, while Lee Kang-in narrowly missed the target.
South Africa responded with intensity but struggled with finishing in key moments. Evidence Makgopa came closest in the 30th minute after a rebound fell to him inside the box, but his tame effort was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.
As the match progressed, the urgency on the pitch grew, especially after news filtered through that Mexico were leading the Czech Republic in the other group fixture.
South Korea pressed late through Oh Hyeon-gyu, but Ronwen Williams held firm to preserve the lead.
The victory sends South Africa into the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28. Mexico finished top of the group with a perfect nine points.
