South African police have arrested two women on Tuesday over the alleged impersonation of an Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) official and the attempted collection of voting materials at Ngcobo Police Station in the Eastern Cape.
According to SA News, Police said the incident happened in the early hours of Monday, when two suspects arrived at the station to collect election materials. The suspects claimed the Presiding Officer had sent them to collect the materials.
However, the Presiding Officer was already at the station and had not authorised anyone to collect the materials. Police identified the suspects before they could leave the station. Officers also recovered the voting materials.

The two women were arrested on Tuesday and have since been processed by the police. Police opened a case under Section 68(d) of South Africa’s Municipal Electoral Act 27 of 2000, which prohibits impersonating an IEC official.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, said the police would not allow anyone to interfere with the electoral process.
“We will not tolerate any interference with the electoral process. The arrest of the two suspects demonstrates our commitment to upholding the integrity of the elections. Anyone who impersonates an IEC official will face the full might of the law,” Ncata said.
The arrests come as South Africans vote in the 2026 Local Government Elections, with authorities maintaining security around the electoral process.
