South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has removed Central Bank Governor Johnny Ohisa, the latest in a series of dismissals and leadership changes in the government.
Kiir announced Ohisa’s removal late on Wednesday in a decree read on state television, without giving a reason for the decision.
The president appointed Addis Ababa Othow as his replacement. Othow previously served as central bank governor between June and November last year.
Kiir has made several changes to senior government positions in recent months, with analysts linking the moves to efforts to consolidate his power as uncertainty grows over the country’s political succession.
Ohisa, an economist who has served as central bank governor on several occasions, was reappointed to the position earlier this year after previously holding the role twice.
The latest leadership change comes as South Sudan’s economy faces growing pressure from declining oil revenues, recurring cash shortages, high inflation and currency depreciation.
