Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), and Colombia top the list of the world’s most neglected displacement crises, according to a Thursday statement from the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).

The prominent aid organisation relies on three specific criteria to compile this list: a lack of humanitarian funding, a lack of media coverage, and a lack of political will within the international community.

A bloody conflict between two rival generals has ravaged Sudan since 2023, creating more than nine million internally displaced people.

The NRC noted that an additional four million Sudanese have fled to neighbouring countries, while nearly 19.5 million people within the nation suffer from hunger.

NRC Chief Jan Egeland expressed bewilderment that a displacement crisis mirroring the peak of the Syria and Ukraine crises could worsen almost unnoticed.

He blamed this on nations becoming more inward-looking and nationalistic, prioritising domestic rearmament over global hope, while warning that Africa’s collapse would directly bring pandemics and massive migration to nearby Europe.

The DR Congo appeared on the NRC’s list for the 10th consecutive year, as an Ebola epidemic added further turmoil to an eastern region already devastated by decades of conflict.

The NRC reported that international donors provided only 27.4 per cent of the necessary funding for DR Congo in 2025, leaving more than 21 million people in need.

Egeland condemned this shortfall as a testament to the world’s failure to respond to crises that rich countries do not deem strategically important.

The aid group highlighted a systemic pattern of deliberate neglect across several African nations—including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Mali, and Nigeria—which have all featured on the list six or more times.

Ultimately, the 10 most neglected crises for 2025 span three continents and affect tens of millions of people, ranking in order as Sudan, the DR Congo, Colombia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Honduras, Ecuador, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Mozambique.
