Ghanaian Police officers have arrested a 39-year-old teacher seen in a viral video assaulting a student at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School.

The suspect, identified as Eric Buernortey Apaflo, is a school staff member and also serves as a hostel caretaker.

Augustine Antwi, in a statement signed on behalf of the Police Public Affairs Unit, said the suspect was arrested on June 8 at about 7 p.m. following reports of an assault on an 18-year-old female student, Patience Chibu.

The incident triggered an outrage among students, who allegedly threw stones at the suspect and attempted to mobilise some youth from the community to attack the hostel.

Police said the situation was brought under control following the intervention of a patrol team deployed to the school.

A police medical report form has been issued to the victim for examination and treatment, while the suspect remains in custody, assisting with the investigation.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and to resolve disputes through lawful and peaceful means.
