Three people have sustained injuries after a truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into multiple vehicles along the LASU-Isheri Road in the Igando area of Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the crash occurred at Iyana School, inward Igando, and involved a MACK flatbed truck, a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles.
According to LASTMA, preliminary investigations indicate that the truck lost its brakes, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into the other vehicles.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the unfortunate incident involved a MACK flatbed truck, which reportedly suffered a catastrophic brake failure, causing the driver to lose effective control before violently colliding with a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles, thereby triggering a serious multi-vehicle crash,” the agency said on Tuesday.
The agency said its officers, who were on routine patrol in the area, immediately activated emergency response procedures to rescue victims, prevent further accidents and restore traffic flow.
“LASTMA personnel, who were on routine traffic surveillance and operational patrol within the corridor, responded with remarkable promptitude by immediately activating the Agency’s emergency response protocol. Their swift intervention was instrumental in rescuing the trapped victims, preventing secondary collisions and restoring the orderly flow of vehicular traffic along the affected route,” the agency added.
The agency said it worked with officers of the Iba Police Division to evacuate the damaged vehicles and clear the accident scene.
“Regrettably, the accident left three occupants, one male and two females, with varying degrees of severe fracture injuries. Through the prompt and coordinated intervention of LASTMA Officers and other emergency responders, the victims were successfully extricated from the wreckage and immediately conveyed to El-Shaddai Hospital, where they are presently receiving specialised medical treatment,” it said.
The vehicles involved in the collision included the MACK flatbed truck, a Toyota vehicle with registration number FGC 80 XE and a TVS commercial tricycle with registration number LSR 604 QP.
LASTMA said its officers remained at the scene throughout the rescue operation to regulate traffic and ensure the full restoration of normal vehicular movement.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki commended the emergency responders for their swift intervention and urged motorists, particularly operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles, to prioritise regular maintenance.
He urged drivers to carry out comprehensive mechanical inspections before every trip, especially on braking systems.
“Routine preventive maintenance of critical vehicle components remains indispensable in mitigating avoidable road traffic crashes and enhancing overall road safety across Lagos State,” Bakare-Oki said.
He also urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and promptly report road emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free emergency short code, 3367, to enable rapid response by the agency.
