President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating insecurity through the deployment of emerging technologies, intelligence-driven operations and the modernisation of the nation’s armed forces.

According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Office of the Vice President, the President made the pledge on Monday at the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration and the African Land Forces Forum (ALFF) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He was represented at the event by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima.

Speaking on the theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army, Tinubu said his administration was investing in modern military equipment and strengthening personnel capacity to improve operational planning and combat readiness.

He said the government remained committed to confronting evolving security threats by adopting emerging technologies across all areas of military operations, while also prioritising research and development to advance indigenous defence innovations.

“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness,” he declared.

The President said the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) was central to the administration’s plan to boost local production of military hardware, create skilled jobs and enhance Nigeria’s ability to equip its armed forces.

He noted that although previous administrations had attempted to revive DICON, his government was determined to complete the process as part of broader efforts to strengthen the military’s capacity to tackle contemporary security challenges.

Tinubu also described the African Land Forces Forum (ALFF) as a significant platform for strengthening regional defence cooperation and knowledge-sharing, saying the partnership would help improve the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Army while promoting innovation and economic opportunities in the defence sector.

The President commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for what he described as their selfless service and sacrifices in protecting the country, noting that their contributions extended beyond Nigeria’s borders to global peace and security.

“Their devotion to neutralising threats in this part of the world extends beyond our borders. It becomes a real contribution to global security, peace, and stability,” he added.

He paid tribute to fallen soldiers, assuring that their sacrifices would never be forgotten and pledging continued support for their families.

Tinubu also praised the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, and Great Minds Event Management for organising the joint event, which he said had strengthened strategic dialogue and defence collaboration across Africa.

Earlier, Siminalayi Fubara described the hosting of the event in Rivers State as a sign of peace and stability, contrary to negative narratives about the state. He also called for improved welfare for officers and personnel of the Nigerian Army.

In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, said the Nigerian Army remained committed to defending the country’s territorial integrity and safeguarding Nigerians’ lives despite evolving security challenges.

Shaibu said the changing security environment had continued to shape the army’s operational strategies and commended officers and soldiers serving in various theatres of operation for their dedication and sacrifices.

He also thanked President Tinubu for his continued support to the armed forces and reaffirmed the army’s loyalty to the President and the Nigerian state.

The event featured the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards, military demonstrations and tactical displays by various units of the Nigerian Army.

Among those in attendance were former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, senior government officials, members of the National Assembly and top military commanders.
