Two people sustained injuries on Saturday after a trailer carrying a 40-foot container fell from the New Parts, Nkpor Bridge along the Onitsha-Awka Expressway in Anambra State and landed on vehicles below.

Six people were involved in the crash. Two suffered minor injuries, while four others escaped unharmed.

The accident, which occurred around 1 p.m., disrupted traffic on the busy expressway after the fallen trailer blocked the road, causing a gridlock that lasted several hours.

Witnesses said the trailer reportedly suffered brake failure while descending the bridge, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle veered off the bridge and crashed onto vehicles beneath it.

According to eyewitness accounts, passengers who had been in a shuttle bus below the bridge managed to flee moments before the trailer landed on the vehicle. Some reportedly sustained minor injuries while escaping.

“The accident occurred when the driver of the trailer suddenly lost brake as he was descending the bridge. He lost control, veered off the bridge, and crashed into other vehicles beneath the bridge.

“Fortunately, about six passengers already inside a shuttle bus beneath the bridge had fled the scene before the trailer fell on the bus, although some of them sustained minor injuries while running away,” an eyewitness said.

Confirming the incident, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Margaret Onabe, said the crash involved four vehicles: a Mercedes-Benz articulated truck, two commercial shuttle buses and an Audi Volkswagen car.

According to her, preliminary investigation identified brake failure and loss of control as the probable cause of the crash.

The agency added that the injured victims had already been taken to a nearby hospital before rescue officials arrived.

To restore traffic flow and prevent secondary crashes, the FRSC said its heavy-duty towing unit was deployed to remove the affected vehicles from the roadway.

“According to eyewitness reports, the trailer experienced brake failure, veered off the bridge, and fell onto the other vehicles beneath the bridge.

“Before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team, the injured victims had already been evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

“To ensure free flow of traffic and prevent secondary crashes, the FRSC heavy-duty tow truck unit was promptly contacted to clear the obstruction caused by the affected vehicles,”she added.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, wished the injured victims a speedy recovery and advised motorists, particularly operators of articulated vehicles and commercial transport services, to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and regular checks on braking systems before embarking on journeys.
