At least 15 people were injured after two trams collided on Rotterdam’s iconic Erasmus Bridge on Wednesday, prompting the closure of the major transport route.
The Erasmus Bridge, a key landmark spanning the River Maas, is one of the busiest transport links in the Dutch port city.
Footage from a webcam overlooking the bridge showed one tram crashing into the rear of another, scattering debris across the roadway and leaving both vehicles heavily damaged.
An AFP reporter at the scene observed twisted metal and shattered glass as emergency responders worked to assist passengers.
Authorities sealed off the area and closed the bridge to traffic in both directions while rescue operations continued.
Emergency personnel used stretchers and wheelchairs to evacuate the injured.
Although city officials initially reported 18 casualties, the figure was later revised to 15, according to Dutch broadcaster NOS. The seriously injured victim was taken to hospital.
Rotterdam public transport operator RET said it was shocked by the incident and would work closely with emergency services to determine the cause of the collision.
The company said efforts were ongoing to establish how the crash occurred.
“We have seen the footage and are deeply shocked,” Rotterdam transport company RET said.
“In cooperation with the emergency services, we will do everything we can to uncover how this could have happened,” added the firm in a statement.
