United States President Donald Trump has called on countries to impose total economic isolation on Iran, demanding that Tehran end attacks on commercial shipping, abandon its nuclear ambitions and stop supporting what he described as terrorism.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump also said the United States has sufficient ammunition and missile stockpiles and is rapidly expanding weapons production to strengthen its ability to supply allies.
“The cowards and traitors would love to say the United States is low on munitions, but that’s not true,” Trump said.
“We have more munitions than we could ever possibly even think of using, and we’re building them at levels that we have never done before. We are adding to our stockpiles faster than we have ever been able to do before.’
Trump also said 18 major ammunition plants are under construction, which would significantly increase the production and deployment of missiles and other ammunition.
According to him, the expanded production capacity would also enable the United States to supply its allies faster.
The US president subsequently called on countries to join Washington in imposing economic pressure on Iran.
“I call on all nations to join us in enforcing the complete economic isolation of Iran until they stop their attacks on commercial shipping, relinquish their nuclear ambitions, and cease their support of terror,” he said.
Trump described the Iranian government as a “terrorist regime” and attributed its actions to what he characterised as weakness and desperation.
He said a united international response could bring an end to what he called the 51-year menace of Iranian terror.
Trump also linked the conflict to global oil prices, predicting that prices would fall further if the situation changed.
“With courage and resolve, anything is possible. Big changes can happen, and happen fast,” he said.
