In a last-minute decision, President Donald Trump has indefinitely extended the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, narrowly avoiding a scheduled resumption of military hostilities.

The president cited a mediation request from Pakistan as the primary reason for the extension, suggesting that Iran’s leadership requires additional time to consolidate a formal proposal.

Despite the pause in active combat, Trump emphasised that the U.S. military will continue its strict blockade of Iranian ports and remains in a state of high combat readiness.

The extension has cast a shadow of uncertainty over diplomatic efforts in Islamabad.

Following the announcement, the White House confirmed that Vice President JD Vance’s planned visit to Pakistan has been postponed until a proposal from Tehran is received.

Meanwhile, Islamabad remains under heavy security, with police and soldiers cordoning off the government quarter despite the lack of confirmed high-level meetings between the two nations.

Tensions in the region remain at a boiling point as both sides reinforce their strategic positions.

While the U.S. Navy recently intercepted a sanctioned vessel linked to Iranian activity, Tehran has threatened to strike the oil production facilities of neighbouring Gulf states if their territory is utilised for American military operations.

In the Iranian capital, residents expressed growing despair, noting that the economic and social conditions under the “cursed ceasefire” have continued to deteriorate despite the cessation of active bombing.

On a parallel diplomatic front, the State Department announced that Israel and Lebanon are scheduled to hold fresh talks in Washington this Thursday.

This comes amidst a separate ten-day ceasefire involving Hezbollah; however, sporadic violence continues to mar the agreement.

Recent rocket fire from Hezbollah and retaliatory Israeli strikes serve as a reminder of the fragility of peace efforts across the wider Middle East conflict.
