United States (US) President Donald Trump has called for compensation from Canada over wildfire smoke that has spread across the northeastern United States, saying the country should pay damages or face more tariffs.
Trump made the remarks on Sunday after holding talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Speaking to reporters after returning to Washington, Trump said he had a good relationship with Carney but stressed that Canada must deal with the wildfires.
“I have a good relationship with Mark Carney, but you know, we got to stop the fires up there,” Trump said.
He added that while the United States was willing to help Canada tackle the fires, there should be consequences for the smoke affecting Americans.
“If we can help them, we’ll help them. But maybe they should pay us some damages or something, or we should do some tariffs,” he added.
Smoke from wildfires burning across Canada and northern Minnesota has triggered unhealthy air quality alerts in several parts of the northeastern United States.
The smoke had also raised concerns ahead of the World Cup final, although the match went ahead as planned.
Earlier on Friday, Trump accused Canada of “wilful negligence” over the fires and warned that the cost of the pollution could be added to existing tariffs imposed on Canadian goods.
“The cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying,” Trump said.
