United States (US) President Donald Trump has said a peace deal with Iran is still expected to be signed within hours, despite an Israeli strike on Beirut that briefly disrupted the process.

According to AFP, speaking in a phone call to Axios on Sunday, Trump said the attack delayed the signing of the agreement.

“It shook it up. It delayed the signing by a few hours. It was supposed to be now. Now it is scheduled for a few hours from now,” he said.

Trump also expressed anger at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the strike, which hit Beirut’s southern suburbs and left three people dead.

“Why did Bibi (Netanyahu) have to do a fucking attack?. “I was so pissed off. I let him know. He has no fucking judgement,”  Trump said.

According to Trump, the strike came just an hour before the planned signing of the deal.

Tehran has maintained that any agreement to end the conflict must also take into account the parallel fighting in Lebanon, where Israel has been carrying out operations against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group.
