Turkish authorities have arrested 119 people across 30 provinces over alleged links to the Islamic State (IS) group, the country’s Interior Ministry said on Saturday.
The nationwide operation targeted suspects accused of belonging to the militant group, spreading IS propaganda on social media and financing its activities through intermediaries or organisations presented as charities.
The arrests were carried out in several provinces, including Istanbul and the capital, Ankara.

“(The) 199 suspects were arrested in a police operation carried out in 30 provinces against the Daesh terrorist organisation, including in Istanbul and Ankara,” the ministry said, using another name for the IS terrorist group.
The latest crackdown follows heightened security operations in recent weeks.
In June, Turkish police shot dead a man suspected of having links to the Islamic State during a gun battle in southern Ankara, just weeks before the city hosted a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) summit.
Following that incident, authorities detained 209 people in Ankara over suspected links to the Islamic State and far-left militant groups under the direction of the city’s chief prosecutor.
