A Ghanaian man who crowned himself king of a self-proclaimed “African tribe” and set up camp in the Scottish Borders has been deported from the United Kingdom, the Home Office has confirmed.

Kofi Offeh, who called himself King Atehene, arrived at Accra International Airport on April 22, local media reported. He was deported after authorities discovered irregularities in his immigration status.

Offeh and his partner, Jean Gasho – who called herself Queen Nandi – set up the self-proclaimed Kingdom of Kubala in woodland near Jedburgh in May last year. They claimed to be reoccupying land stolen from their ancestors 400 years ago.

The group made headlines around the world. A sheriff issued a warrant for their removal, and they were evicted. They then moved to a neighbouring plot of land owned by the Scottish Borders Council.

Following further legal action, sheriff officers, police and immigration enforcement officers removed them from the second camp in October.

The Home Office confirmed at the time that a Ghanaian man and an American woman had been arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

‘I have come to take over Ghana’

Speaking to Kofi TV at Accra International Airport after his arrival, Offeh insisted his mission to establish a kingdom was still on course.

“I have come to take over Ghana because I am the King of Kubala. Everywhere I land, I take dominion; where I establish my throne, so the time has come,” he said.

“Everyone will bow before me, whether chiefs, politicians or even the police are going to serve me.”

He said his next focus is Sunyani, which he described as “Sun City” and “where the sunshine starts in Ghana”.

He said he intends to build his new kingdom there after the collapse of his Kubala camp in Scotland.

Offeh maintained that his authority follows him wherever he goes.

“My presence alone in the country is enough to establish dominion,” he said.
