The United States has condemned the killing of members of the family of Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo in Plateau State, describing the attack as part of a disturbing pattern of violence against Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
In a post shared on X on Thursday by the US Bureau of African Affairs, Washington expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged Nigerian authorities to take stronger measures to prevent further attacks and hold those responsible accountable.
“The United States strongly condemns the horrific killing of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, Nigeria,” the post read.
It added that “the continued violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is deeply alarming.”
The US government extended its sympathies to those affected by the attack.
Referring to recent engagements with Nigerian officials, the statement stressed the need for stronger action to address the persistent insecurity in the region.
The Bureau of African Affairs called for those behind the killings to be brought to justice, insisting that more must be done to protect at-risk communities.
“The perpetrators must be held accountable, and urgent action is needed to strengthen security and protect Christians and other vulnerable communities,” the statement added.
Reaffirming Washington’s security partnership with Nigeria, the bureau said the United States would continue supporting efforts to tackle terrorism and violent extremism.
“The United States remains committed to working with the Nigerian government and our partners to combat terrorism, counter violent extremism, and ensure that Christians and all Nigerians can live and practice their faith freely without fear of violence or persecution,” it said.
The statement follows the reported killing of members of Reverend Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, one of Nigeria’s most volatile regions.
Plateau, located in the country’s Middle Belt, has for years witnessed recurring violence driven by a complex mix of farmer-herder disputes, communal tensions, criminality, and attacks by armed groups.
Thousands of people have been killed and displaced in repeated outbreaks of violence despite increased security deployments.
