A United States (US) citizen doctor who contracted Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been discharged from a hospital in Germany after making a successful recovery.
The Charité Hospital in Berlin confirmed on Saturday that no Ebola virus had been detected in the patient since May 30. The patient, identified by the Serge Christian organisation as medical missionary Peter Stafford, was admitted to the hospital on May 20 after becoming infected while treating patients in the DRC.
According to the hospital, his condition improved significantly following treatment that included combined antiviral therapy and other supportive medical care.
“Ebola symptoms in the patient subsided significantly,” the hospital said in a statement.

A Charité official, Leif Erik Sander, described the recovery as a major achievement.
“We are very pleased with the successful course of treatment and consider this a significant therapeutic success,” Sander said.
The hospital also revealed that five members of Stafford’s family, who were classified as high-risk contacts and placed under quarantine, did not develop any symptoms of infection. The discharge comes as health authorities continue to monitor Ebola outbreaks in parts of Africa.
According to available figures, 82 confirmed Ebola-related deaths had been recorded as of Friday since the outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Health officials have continued efforts to contain the spread of the virus while monitoring new cases in affected regions.
