The United States has implemented temporary travel restrictions on passengers returning from Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to mitigate the risk of Ebola transmission.

Under updated public health protocols from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. citizens and nationals who visited or transited through Uganda or South Sudan within 21 days of arrival must route their flights through designated U.S. airports for mandatory public health entry screenings.

The agency imposed even stricter restrictions on travellers originating from the DRC, prohibiting commercial airline passengers—including American citizens—who have visited the DRC within the past 21 days from boarding U.S.-bound flights.

The CDC advised these travellers to remain abroad until 21 days have passed since they departed from the country.

Local authorities in Ebola-affected DRC provinces may also impose additional screening measures before departure, and health officials will immediately transfer any traveller with suspected Ebola symptoms to a hospital for evaluation, isolation, and medical care.
