Nigerian inmates at AbaSamuel Prison in Addis Ababa have expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu following the successful conclusion of a prisoner transfer agreement between Nigeria and Ethiopia, as shown in a video on Saturday.
In the video shared by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Ojukwu, inmates were seen celebrating and thanking the president for facilitating the agreement.
The deal will allow eligible prisoners to serve the remainder of their jail terms in Nigeria.
“Thank you, Mr President,” Ojukwu wrote on her X handle alongside the video.
“Nigeria inmates in AbaSamuel Prisons, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia express their joy and appreciation to the President… on the successful conclusion of the bilateral Prisoner Transfer Agreement with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.”

“Your country will not desert you… Your President knows you are here,” she wrote on her X handle.
“This was the message of hope, and promise that we took to Nigerian inmates at the AbaSamuel Prisons, Ethiopia.”
Ojukwu revealed that four Nigerian prisoners died within the timeframe it took for negotiations, judicial vetting and the final conclusion of the agreement.
“We have lost four Nigerian prisoners within the time frame it has taken for the negotiations, judicial vetting and the final conclusion of this agreement,” she said.
“This agreement is rooted in the principles of humanity, justice and cooperation between our two nations.”

The agreement, signed this week by officials of both countries, will allow convicted citizens of Nigeria and Ethiopia to be transferred to their home countries to complete their prison sentences.
The National Government has said more than 100 Nigerians currently serving prison terms in Ethiopia are expected to benefit from the arrangement.
The agreement was facilitated by Ojukwu and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, as part of efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerians serving sentences abroad.
The video showed a large group of inmates in yellow and red uniforms cheering loudly, waving hands, and celebrating the announcement in a prison hall.
