A Nigerian police officer who threatened to kill anyone who records him while on duty has been summoned for disciplinary action, the police force said Thursday, after a viral video sparked widespread outrage.
ASP Newton Isokpehi posted a video on his TikTok account in which he warned members of the public against filming police officers during operations.
“Any day I’m on duty with my rifle as an officer, let somebody video me. Let that Oga that gave you an order to video us, he’ll come and bury you,” the officer said in Pidgin English.
“If dem born anybody well, make una video me.”
The Nigeria Police Force condemned the conduct as “unacceptable, unprofessional, and inconsistent with the ethics, standards, and code of conduct” of the force.
In the video, Isokpehi also complained about poor welfare, lack of accountability and alleged that families of deceased officers were often denied benefits.
“There’s no accountability in the police force,” he said, displaying what appeared to be scars from gunshot wounds on his shoulders.
“Monkey de work, Baboon de chop. All my body na bullet wounds full am,” he said.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has consistently maintained that citizens have the right to lawfully record police officers on duty, provided it does not obstruct operations, compromise safety, or interfere with lawful police activities, the force said.
Isokpehi has been summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters, where disciplinary procedures have commenced.
“In line with this position, the officer involved has since been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters where immediate disciplinary procedures have commenced,” the force noted.
“The Nigeria Police Force does not tolerate threats, intimidation, abuse of office, or any conduct capable of undermining public trust and confidence in law enforcement institutions.
“The Force further reiterates that recording police activities remains a legitimate tool for public accountability and transparency and should not, in itself, attract harassment or intimidation from police personnel while discharging their duties.
“A formal statement detailing the outcome of the disciplinary measures taken against the officer will be communicated in due course.”
