Benin Republic’s outgoing president, Patrice Talon, will officially hand over to his successor, 49-year-old Romuald Wadagni, the erstwhile Minister of Economy and Finance, today, May 24, 2026, bringing Talon’s decade-long rule to a close.
Wadagni won Benin’s April 2026 presidential election with more than 94% of the vote. He takes office as Benin’s fourth democratically elected president since the country’s return to democracy in 1990.
Benin’s constitutional court confirmed Wadagni’s victory in its April 16 ruling. Mariam Chabi Talata, who served as Talon’s vice during his tenure, will be inaugurated alongside Wadagni as the returning Vice President today.

Days earlier, Talon had addressed the Beninese people, marking the closing chapter of his decade-long rule.
“As I prepare to leave office, I would like to thank you wholeheartedly and tell you how proud I am of you for the demanding path we dared to take together over the past ten years,”
Political analysts in the West African country view Wadagni as a builder rather than a traditional politician, emphasising that his arrival could completely reshape the nation’s governance model.
Wadagni will inherit a country facing terrorist threats in its northern territories and will be tasked with addressing the worsening insecurity crisis in the region.
Aside from security, financial experts expect Talon’s successor to prioritise economic continuity, focusing on infrastructure development, stable investment frameworks, and fiscal discipline.
