Mustafa Bello, a former minister of commerce, assumed the role of Zenith Bank chairman on Tuesday, succeeding Jim Ovia, who retired after 12 years in the role.
Bello’s appointment didn’t come as a surprise, given that he was already serving as a non-executive director at the bank before stepping into the role of chairman.

Here are five things to know about Mustafa Bello:
1. Engineering graduate and professional.
Bello is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he studied engineering and graduated with a Second Class Upper Division. He also won the Shell Prize for the best project and thesis in the Faculty of Engineering in 1978.
After graduation, he served at the Directorate of Quartering and Engineering Services of the Nigerian Army between 1978 and 1979, before working as a senior civil engineer at the Niger State Housing Corporation from 1980 to 1983.

2. Former Minister of Commerce
He served as Nigeria’s Federal Minister of Commerce from 1999 to 2002, during which time he helped shape trade and economic policy in the early years of Nigeria’s democratic return.
3. Headed Nigeria’s investment promotion agency
Following his ministerial role, Bello was appointed Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), where he focused on attracting foreign and domestic investment into Nigeria.
4. Long-serving Zenith Bank board member
Bello joined the Board of Zenith Bank Plc on December 29, 2017, and became the longest-serving director before his elevation to chairman.
5. Experienced public and private sector leader
Over the years, Bello has held senior roles across public institutions and private sector engagements, giving him a strong blend of policy, economic, and corporate leadership experience.
