American tennis players Serena and Venus Williams will team up for the Wimbledon women’s doubles on Saturday for the first time since capturing their sixth tournament title a decade ago.

At the same time, reigning singles champion Iga Swiatek will face Filipino history-maker Alexandra Eala, while injury-plagued veterans Grigor Dimitrov and Matteo Berrettini clash in the men’s last 16 on Centre Court.

Organisers delayed the Williams sisters’ first-round match against Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra to give 44-year-old Serena extra time to recover from a knee injury she sustained during her first-round singles loss to Maya Joint.

Despite the setback, medical staff passed Serena as fit to compete alongside Venus.

The legendary duo last played doubles at the All England Club in 2016, when they secured their 14th and most recent Grand Slam doubles title.

Sierra expressed immense excitement about the opportunity, calling the chance to face both sisters an incredible experience.

“She’s won a Slam on grass. She’s won a Slam on clay. She’s won a Slam on hard… I’m expecting a great challenge. But I think I’m ready for it.”
— Alexandra Eala, World No. 29

On Centre Court, third seed Swiatek will resume her rivalry with the 29th-seeded Eala after dominant performances by both athletes.

Swiatek advanced by overwhelming former world number one Karolina Pliskova, losing only four games.

Eala has already made history as the first tennis player from the Philippines to reach the third round of a Grand Slam in the Open era.

While Swiatek expects a tricky match due to Eala’s rhythm changes, Eala feels prepared to face the six-time Grand Slam champion head-on.

The day will also feature a high-stakes battle between wildcard entry Dimitrov and former finalist Berrettini.

Both players have overcome severe career injuries, with Dimitrov currently ranked 146th following a pectoral injury that forced him out of last year’s tournament.

Berrettini, 30, also returns to top form after a recent injury forced him to retire during the French Open quarter-finals.

This match marks the first time the two competitors have faced each other on court since 2019.
