Israeli Forces Kill Hamas Leader Sinwar—Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that Israeli forces had killed Mohammed Sinwar, believed to be the current leader of Hamas in Gaza and the younger brother of the late former chief, Yahya Sinwar.

“Over 600 days of the ‘War of Revival,’ we have truly reshaped the Middle East,” Netanyahu told parliament.

“We expelled the terrorists from our land, entered the Gaza Strip with force, eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists, and eliminated Mohammed Sinwar.”

Israeli media previously reported that Sinwar had been targeted in air strikes carried out by Israel in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, on May 13.

At the time, the Israeli military stated that it had “precisely struck Hamas terrorists in a command and control centre located within an underground terrorist infrastructure site beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis.”

Mohammed’s elder brother, Yahya Sinwar, whom Israel held responsible for orchestrating the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that sparked the Gaza war, was killed in southern Gaza in October 2024.

According to analysts, Mohammed Sinwar likely assumed leadership of Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, after the reported death of its former head, Mohammed Deif.

Since October 7, with several senior Hamas figures killed, Mohammed Sinwar had reportedly taken a central role in indirect talks with Israel, overseeing the hostage issue and directing the group’s military operations.

Hamas is officially designated as a terrorist organisation by the United States, the European Union, and others.
