A tragic helicopter crash in Ashanti Region, Ghana has claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers and two others. The incident occurred on August 6, 2025, near Adansi Akrofuom in the Adansi Akrofuom District, as the officials were en route to a government programme in Obuasi.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a devastating impact, with the helicopter reportedly bursting into flames upon crashing. The aircraft, confirmed to be a Z9 helicopter operated by the Ghana Armed Forces, had gone missing earlier in the morning before the crash was discovered.

Among the victims were Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. Their deaths were confirmed by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, in an official statement.

According to reports, the helicopter was carrying a total of eight people—three crew members and five passengers—all believed to be top government officials. The loss has sent shockwaves through the country’s leadership and military establishment.

“A GAF helicopter, Z9, that took off this morning at 0912hrs from Accra and heading for Obuasi is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact. On board were 3 crew and 5 passengers. Further details to be communicated soon,” the statement reads.

The government officials were on their way to attend the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), an initiative focused on combating illegal mining, when the fatal crash occurred near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region. The programme was scheduled to take place in Obuasi.
