The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is expected to issue a decision on Monday, 16 February 2026, regarding Nigeria’s protest over the eligibility of DR Congo players in the African playoff final.
This ruling could determine whether the Super Eagles still have a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged the complaint on December 15, 2025, claiming that six DR Congo players who played in the November 2025 final were ineligible due to recent changes in their international allegiance.
Nigeria lost 4-3 on penalties, ending their direct qualification bid.

Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, NFF General Secretary, expressed confidence in the federation’s case, telling reporters that the NFF believes the complaint is strong and that they “do not pursue matters that are futile.”
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi also voiced hope ahead of the ruling, saying the team remains optimistic.
If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favour, the Super Eagles would be reinstated and advance to the six-team Intercontinental Play-Off in March in Mexico.
Millions of Nigerian fans are now awaiting Monday’s verdict, which could dramatically alter the Super Eagles’ road to the World Cup.
