The Israeli military has ordered the mass evacuation of residents in nearly 50 villages across eastern and southern Lebanon ahead of possible retaliatory strikes after Hezbollah fired into Israel.

Hezbollah launched strikes into Israel on Sunday night, firing missiles and drones from southern Lebanon toward northern Israeli territory in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who died following the coordinated strikes launched by Israel and the United States on Saturday.

Explosions were heard in the Lebanese capital of Beirut. Lebanese security sources told Reuters that Israel had struck the city’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold.

Hezbollah’s attack on Israel adds another layer of complexity to the already escalating tensions in the Middle East, which has been reeling from ongoing attacks and counterattacks.

The Israeli Military ordered residents in the eastern and southern regions of Lebanon to move at least 1,000 metres away to open areas for their safety, adding that it does not intend to harm civilians and calling on residents to protect themselves and their loved ones by leaving the target areas without delay. It also warned that anyone who does not dissociate from Hezbollah members, facilities, or military equipment would put their lives at risk.
