Senate President Godswill Akpabio has again thrown his weight behind the push to create Anioma State, reaffirming both legislative and political support for the proposal.

He spoke on Wednesday in Asaba during the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where party leaders and stakeholders from across the region gathered. Governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River states were also in attendance.

Akpabio said the Bola Tinubu administration remains committed to seeing the process through, describing the demand for Anioma State as long overdue. According to him, the agitation reflects “a long-standing aspiration rooted in equity, administrative efficiency, and balanced development.”

He noted that the proposal, championed by Ned Nwoko, has continued to gain traction in the National Assembly and is now a key focus of the 10th Senate. He added that creating a new state would not only address governance concerns but also unlock economic opportunities.

Speaking on how the arrangement could work, Akpabio said Warri is well-positioned to serve as the capital of what would remain of Delta State, pointing to its existing infrastructure. He listed facilities such as an airport, seaport, government institutions, major oil company presence, and a stadium as advantages.

“Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” he said.

“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities.”

“With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”

The former Akwa Ibom governor argued that splitting Delta into two states would create more balanced and effective administration, while also deepening decentralisation.

He also used the opportunity to call for unity across the South-South, urging political leaders and citizens to align with the federal government’s agenda. According to him, broader support for ongoing reforms would strengthen national integration and drive sustainable growth.

The push for Anioma State has gathered momentum in recent months. In November 2025, Nwoko revealed that the proposal had secured significant backing, including support from constitutional amendment committees and endorsements from dozens of senators—an indication of how far the idea has progressed within the legislative process.
