Essential medical supplies intended to combat cholera outbreaks across Africa have become trapped in a logistical deadlock caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Aid officials told Reuters on Friday that emergency stocks—including field hospital kits, rehydration treatments, and water purification chemicals—are currently stranded in Dubai warehouses.

The maritime blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has forced a reliance on air and overland routes, leading to massive congestion and a 70% spike in transportation costs.

The timing of the disruption is particularly critical as aid agencies, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Red Cross (IFRC), prepare for the high-risk rainy season beginning in May.

Countries such as Chad, Sudan, and South Sudan are among the most vulnerable, especially with millions of refugees living in crowded camps where the “explosive” diarrhoeal disease can spread in hours.

In Chad’s eastern Ouaddai province, local doctors warned that current medicine stocks are only sufficient for approximately 100 patients if an outbreak occurs.

While global cholera cases have dropped by 50% so far in 2026 compared to the previous year, health experts warn against complacency.

The WHO emphasised that any break in the supply chain could have “dramatic consequences,” as the disease requires immediate intervention to prevent mass contamination.

Aid organisations are now desperately seeking alternative funding to either fly the stranded kits to their destinations or purchase expensive local replacements to ensure life-saving resources arrive before the rains begin.
