DR Congo Ebola Cases Hit 3,000

Confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo approached 3,000 on Friday after health authorities updated provincial data and recorded over 300 additional infections.

Official reports from the national public health institute confirmed 2,905 cases and 1,269 deaths across the central African nation.

The total mortality count surpassed the 1,000 mark earlier in the week, while health experts attribute Friday’s sudden jump to the integration of regional data from the severely affected provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.

First Bundibugyo Ebola Vaccine Trial Begins

The World Health Organisation warns that the actual scale of the epidemic could be two to four times higher than official tallies reflect.

Declared in mid-May, this outbreak marks Congo’s 17th encounter with the virus, though epidemiologists suspect transmission began weeks before official detection.

The current outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain—a variant carrying a fatal outcome rate of roughly 40 per cent for which no approved vaccine currently exists.
