Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have repelled an attack on a military base in Zamfara State, rescued nine abducted residents and killed several terrorists.
The attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on Sunday at the Forward Operating Base in Kasuwan Daji, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, where troops detected terrorists attempting to infiltrate the facility under the cover of darkness.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations for 8 Division and Sector 2 Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the military said alert troops responded with coordinated firepower that forced the attackers to retreat.
“The successful defense of the base resulted in heavy casualties for the attackers, forcing them to retreat in disarray, and led to the rescue of nine abducted civilians,” the statement said.
According to the Army, the terrorists fled after encountering stiff resistance but abducted an unspecified number of residents from nearby communities during their withdrawal.
“Following the initial engagement, reinforcements arrived and troops launched a hot pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted an unspecified number of residents from the surrounding community during the attack,” Osoba said.

“The relentless pursuit by the troops led to the rescue of nine abducted locals, who were safely recovered.”
Despite the success of the operation, the military confirmed that one Army officer and one police officer were killed during the firefight.
“Regrettably, one Army officer and one Police officer paid the supreme price during the heavy firefight,” Osoba said.
The Army added that two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were airlifted for specialist treatment.
Troops have secured the area and are carrying out exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ casualties while ensuring the safety of surrounding communities.
Describing the failed assault as another setback for armed groups operating in the North West, the Army said the outcome reflected growing pressure on terrorist networks.
“This failed infiltration attempt represents yet another significant operational setback for the terrorists, capping a costly weekend for the group amid intensified military pressure across the North West Theatre,” the statement said.
“The outcome underscores the increasing difficulty these armed groups face in executing coordinated attacks against highly alert and combat-ready troops, further degrading their combat capability, morale, and freedom of action.”
The Army also dismissed online reports claiming that six security personnel were killed during the attack.
