The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) will call for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign, its president Lise Klaveness said on Friday, escalating the organisation’s long-running criticism of the FIFA chief.
Klaveness said Infantino no longer had the institutional trust needed to lead FIFA effectively, adding that the federation would formally demand his resignation.
“He does not have the institutional trust required to lead FIFA in a stable manner in the current climate. There is no turning back for Gianni Infantino,” Klaveness told reporters.
“We are going to ask the FIFA president to resign now,” she said.
The NFF reached the decision a day after its governing bodies met to discuss Infantino’s leadership and other issues facing the organisation.
Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, is seeking a fourth and final term as president at next March’s election. He is currently the only declared candidate. He needs a majority of the 211 votes from FIFA member associations to secure re-election, while candidates have until November 18 to enter the race.
The Italian-Swiss lawyer has faced mounting criticism following the collapse of a proposal to open FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors.
