Ghana Appoints New Defence Minister Kenneth Adjei

Ghana has appointed Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as its new Defence Minister, nearly one year after the death of former Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah in a military helicopter crash.

President John Mahama announced Adjei’s appointment on Friday as part of a cabinet reshuffle that also included new nominations for the environment, science and technology, and local government ministries.

Adjei previously served as Housing Minister and returns to the defence sector after working as Deputy Defence Minister between 2015 and 2017 during Mahama’s earlier administration.

The 47-year-old appointment comes as Ghana continues to address growing regional security concerns, including instability in the Sahel, cross-border crime and maritime security threats in the Gulf of Guinea.

Former Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah died in a military helicopter crash in August 2025, leaving the position vacant.

The latest cabinet changes are expected to strengthen the government’s response to both security and governance challenges.
