Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced plans to run for president in 2031, seeking to succeed his father.
Kainerugaba made the announcement in a series of posts on X late Tuesday, saying he expects to win with his father’s support.
“I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God,” he said.
“With my great father, Mzee’s, support I will get 90% in the elections in 2031,” he added.
The 52-year-old, who is also Uganda’s military chief, leads the Patriotic League of Uganda and has long been viewed as a possible successor to his 81-year-old father.
He previously announced plans to contest the January election but later backed out and supported Museveni’s re-election.
Kainerugaba also played a key role in his father’s latest election victory, ordering a crackdown on opposition supporters and an internet shutdown during the polls.
He is known for controversial social media posts, including threats against opposition leader Bobi Wine, who later fled to the United States, saying he feared for his life.
Museveni’s government has faced accusations of human rights abuses, including torture, kidnappings and arbitrary detention.
The government has denied the allegations.
Another opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, has been in prison since 2024 and is facing a treason trial.
When Reuters asked government spokesman Alan Kasujja whether Museveni would seek another presidential term, he said the president and his party would decide “when the time comes.”
Its pertinent to know that Museveni has ruled Uganda since 1986.
