Nigeria has expressed condolences to Nepal following devastating landslides and flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border that have claimed dozens of lives and displaced thousands, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.
In a statement, the ministry said Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, sympathised with the government and people of Nepal, particularly grieving families and communities whose livelihoods and infrastructure have been severely affected.
The disaster, which occurred on August 26, resulted in significant loss of life, widespread destruction and the displacement of affected communities.
“Nigeria commends the Nepali authorities for the prompt mobilisation of personnel and resources for rescue and humanitarian operations, as well as their ongoing efforts to restore essential services in affected areas,” the statement reads.
“Nigeria strongly hopes that continuing emergency response efforts will provide much-needed relief to the affected communities and facilitate the safe recovery of those missing.
“The Government of Nigeria commends international relief efforts in affected areas, which underscore the importance of sustained international cooperation on emergency management, humanitarian response, and building climate resilience.
“The Government and people of Nigeria stand in solidarity with the Government and people of Nepal at this difficult time, wishing affected communities courage and strength as they undertake the process of recovery and reconstruction.”
