Gunmen have killed at least seven people and wounded 10 others in an attack on a Greek Orthodox church in southern Jordan on Friday, authorities have said.

According to the Public Security Directorate, two assailants arrived in a vehicle and opened fire during a funeral procession at the church compound in Hammoud village, Karak Governorate.

“Seven people died at least… while around 10 people were wounded, some of them critically,” the directorate said in a statement.

The gunmen reportedly fled after the attack. Security forces have launched a manhunt to find those responsible. Minister of Government Communications Mohammed Al-Momani said security forces were investigating the incident.

An eyewitness told Jordan’s state broadcaster, Al-Mamlaka, that the vehicle carrying the gunmen arrived at the scene before they fired continuously for about five minutes and fled.

The witness said between 150 and 200 people were in and around the church at the time of the attack. Most of the victims were reportedly aged between 50 and 70. Karak is home to a significant Christian community in Jordan, a Muslim-majority country.
